From smartphone to Kompakt: what the first month is really like

The first month with Kompakt is mostly about habits, not settings. Most owners on the Mudita forum say the first few days feel awkward, the second and third weeks are spent solving two or three real needs such as messaging, maps and banking, and by the end of the month they either have a setup that works or know what they still need a second device for. This guide is the honest version of that month, based on what owners report.

The first 72 hours

Setup takes a few minutes: language, Wi-Fi, a 6-digit passcode, your fingerprint on the power button, a short tutorial, and an update if one is waiting. Install the update. Many early complaints were fixed in later versions.

Then bring your contacts across. Kompakt does not sync with a cloud account, so you import them once with Mudita Center on your computer, from Google, Outlook, or a CSV or vCard file. iPhone users export a vCard from iCloud first.

If you come from an iPhone, turn off iMessage and FaceTime before you move your SIM card, and turn off RCS if you used it on Android. Otherwise some texts keep going to your old phone. Owners say it can take a few days for the network to settle.

Things that surprise people in the first days:

• There is no notification tray. You see missed calls and texts, but apps you install yourself can play a sound with nothing on screen.
• Alarm, Calendar and Weather are hidden by default. Tap the clock or the date on the home screen, or unhide them in App layout.
• The Offline+ switch on the left side cuts the antenna, microphones, camera, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. You cannot make emergency calls while it is on.
• Pictures you receive by MMS show in shades of gray, like everything on an E Ink screen.

What people miss, and what they don't

What owners say they miss:

• Google Maps and apps that need Google services. Kompakt runs without them.
• Scanning QR codes. The camera reads eSIM codes only. Owners take a photo of the code or look up the website instead.
• A quick way to check opening hours or order a taxi. Some owners sideload a browser or a directory app for this.
• Fast photos. The camera is simple and can be slow to focus.

What they don't miss, once the first week is over: the constant pull to pick up the phone. Owners describe noticing the reflex, then realising there is nothing to check. Owners mention less eye strain from the unlit screen, being able to read in bright sun, the small size, and the headphone jack. Some find that when they do pick it up, they open the e-reader.

Banking, 2FA and messaging, the honest version

Banking and 2FA. This is where most switchers get stuck. Kompakt has no app store, and many banking and authenticator apps depend on Google services, which Kompakt does not support. Some owners got their bank's app working by sideloading it, others could not, and it depends on the bank. The common solution is to keep an old smartphone at home for banking, work authenticators and the odd app that will not run. Before you switch, check whether your bank offers text message codes, a card reader or a web login that works without its app.

Messaging. Calls, SMS and MMS are built in, including group messages from MuditaOS K 1.4.0. WhatsApp, Signal and Telegram are not included. You can sideload them with Mudita Center under Manage Files, App installers. Many owners do, and report they work well enough, but sideloaded apps are not designed for E Ink, may show errors, and problems they cause are not covered by the warranty. Their notifications only play a sound, so you open the app to see what arrived. MuditaOS K 1.4.0 added a Default Apps setting if you want a different messaging app to handle texts.

Getting around with offline maps

The Maps app works without mobile data once you download the maps you need. Do it at home on Wi-Fi before a trip: Apps, Maps, the Menu icon, Manage Maps. Country maps are large, so owners often store them on a microSD card.

Maps gives turn-by-turn directions with voice guidance, and you can add up to 3 stops. Two limits to know: the route always starts from where you are, and Kompakt finds its position from satellites only. A first fix can take a while indoors or between tall buildings. Turning on A-GPS (MuditaOS K 1.5.0 and newer) speeds this up. Navigation also uses a lot of battery, so carry a charger on long drives.

Several owners say the built-in Maps covers most everyday trips. Others plan unfamiliar routes in advance on a computer, or carry a paper map when travelling alone.

Telling friends how to reach you

A short message to the people you talk to most saves a lot of confusion. Owners suggest saying:

• Call or text me. Texts work fine, and I can do group texts.
• Photos arrive in black and white. Send the ones that matter by email or another app I check on my computer.
• If you have a group chat with me from my old phone, start a new one. Old iPhone groups may not reach me.
• I might reply later than before. That is the point.

Tell people who use voice messages that voicemail works as normal. On some networks, mainly in the US, Kompakt shows a voicemail badge; elsewhere your network sends a text.

Tips from owners on the forum

• Keep your old smartphone for the first couple of weeks, switched off in a drawer. One owner who kept a smartphone around while setting up forgot about it within two weeks.
• Pick one approach: use Kompakt as it comes, use it with an occasional smartphone, or sideload the few apps you truly need. Owners who sideload a lot sometimes find the old distractions come back with the apps.
• Use Offline+ in the evening and overnight. Owners say it helps them read and sleep without checking anything.
• If you often end calls by accident or cannot find the hang-up button, try Power button ends calls in Settings, Accessibility.
• When something behaves oddly, restart the phone first. It fixes more than you would expect.
• Make a backup with Mudita Center before you start experimenting.
• Read the forum. Most questions in your first month have been asked and answered there.

The owners who stay with Kompakt tend to decide early which two or three things they really need a phone for, solve those, and let the rest go.
